I told the children that the Bible tells us that God didn’t need to create people. He wasn’t lonely and he didn’t need anything. He chose to create us simply so that He could love us and we could love Him back. And that is what we were created to do-to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. God does not want glory because He needs it from us. He tells us to glorify Him because he created us to do just that. When we love Him, we do what we were made to do, and we are as happy as we can ever be.
Because each of us has also been created by God for a unique purpose, loving God means using our gifts to bring honor and glory to Him, and this brings us joy too.
As I look around campus I can see the joy that comes from doing what we are made to do. Our teachers were definitely created to teach; if you ask, they will tell you that it isn’t just a job. Being called to teach is more than having a knack for explaining concepts. Good teachers love their students selflessly, and are willing to give up their own needs to serve them. They are driven to ensure that their students develop both their souls and their intellects.
Students are made to learn. Their curiosity and drive to understand is innate. We often feel as if we simply have to get out of their way as they voraciously consume, categorize and prioritize information. We don’t have to coax our students to listen to stories, ask questions, experiment and explore. They can’t wait to hear what happens next, whether it is a story from someone’s imagination, from science, history or the Bible. As they enter adolescence, God made them to argue. There is a serious purpose; they need to challenge assumptions and own their own beliefs. As they come to the end of their time at Trinity, it is clear that they were created to go out into the world. They can’t wait to get out-and get started on making a difference. As a result, in our classrooms and hallways, you see lots of smiling faces. Our students are joyful to do what they are made to do.
Each of us, in our profession, uses the gifts that God has given us. Whether you build houses or handle money, design websites or manage a store, you worship God when you use your talents for His glory. When we do what we were made to do, there is a sense of rightness and peace that cannot be explained. This is what I see in the faces of our students and teachers. May we continue to spread this joy outward as we glorify our Lord through doing what He has made us to do.
Psalm 86:12
I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
