The school, itself, has experienced some renewal as well. Many places have a fresh coat of paint, Makai campus classrooms now have upgraded, split-system A/C units, the Science Lab has new cabinets and tables, the Makai office has a new finished look, and we now have a brand-new asphalt sports court for Upper Elementary recess and afterschool sports. The Secondary School students are also sporting a new uniform look, and they are headed this week to a new venue for our Lions’ Camp.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing in the excitement of faculty, families, and students coming back to school. But, when I think of newness, I cannot help but think of the Lord our God, who makes all things new. He is the one behind every improvement, be it a new water fountain or a new attitude towards one’s classmates. He brings a twinge of joy with new socks to wear on the first day of school, and He’s the agent for the deepest and most extensive renewal in our world. And, He renews us! He renews hope for the depressed, brings new comforts for the afflicted, and lifts up the downtrodden. How does He do this? Mercy! “By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3). “His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23). “…by the mercies of God… be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” (Rom 12:1-2).
As we look at the newness of this school year, I urge to you join me in considering God and His mercy and giving thanks to Him, for the here and now and the age to come.
"Behold I make all things new" (Revelation 21:5).
In Christ, Stephen Sprague
