As I reflect on the humble beginnings of the preschool in 1981, I am reminded that God’s plans for this ministry have always been “greater than.” His plans were greater than those who began that preschool. It must have taken great vision to convert dog kennels to classrooms for preschoolers, yet God had even greater plans in store. Consider the timing in 2007-2008 of expanding into a secondary school while simultaneously changing to a classical Christian method. You may recall 2007-2008 as the year of the largest economic crash since the great depression. As several schools the same age and size as TCS closed during that time, those of us on the schoolboard were definitely praying for eyes to see God’s “greater than” vision for the school! And yet God’s plans were even greater than the board members dared to hope. And now, His plans continue to surprise us today—even as we see it unfolding before our very eyes in the lives of our graduates.
Here’s what that unfolding looks like: Each year since 2013, the senior class has built upon the legacy begun by those first eleven graduates. Trinity graduates have competed in biathlons; they have debated and given speeches taking the state championships, and attended nationals on the mainland. They have learned in the way of the masters to recreate great works of art, and have publicly showcased their work. Trinity graduates made great achievements in academics and athletics, receiving college scholarships. In drama, they have memorized copious lines, and rehearsed for hours while maintaining the challenging workload of their studies. Our seniors bring all that they have learned to bear in the field trip of a lifetime—the Grand Tour of Europe. Not only do they experience firsthand and journal about the places and history they have studied, but they must manage themselves as emerging adults who return home as world travelers. As their last academic endeavor at TCS, these well-challenged young people present controversial matters and defend their views on them with a maturity, depth, and poise that betrays their young age. They accomplish all of this, graduating with an average cumulative GPA of 3.5, and 100% of them attending college after graduation. “Greater than” expectations!
We see how God is working in our school to create new opportunities for students to thrive, with the recent addition of the Sports Court and the planned Sato building renovation that will expand classroom spaces. “Greater than” plans!
As we continue to mature and grow, there will inevitably be challenges along the way. When facing those challenges, let us remember that our God is greater than! May we boldly move forward as the many before us who pioneered God’s vision for this school. And let us remain ever grateful, as it is indeed a great time to be part of Trinity!
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
