This time of year is often a time of reflection. Where did our year go? What do we have in store for the coming year? Many of us make resolutions to better ourselves—eat healthier, exercise more, spend more time with God, family and friends, complete something. The list goes on and on. I’d like to add something to your list for you to
ponder upon.
I recently read an article from The Gospel Coalition entitled, “The New Year for Your Children,” in which the author challenges parents to make plans relating to our children very intentional rather than more general or sentimental. While the following points are directed toward parents, we feel they challenge all of us at Trinity in our plans for students and service to parents.
Be mindful of teaching moments. By praying intentionally for these moments, God will bring them into your path. At Trinity our teachers pray for and actively look for these moments in our classrooms.
Discuss with your spouse areas to target with your children. Praying with your spouse about tendencies or areas of struggle for your child will pinpoint teaching moments. As we partner with parents, our teachers endeavor to speak openly and often with parents regarding the needs and plans for their children.
Make intentional plans for what you will teach them this year. Parents should plan Biblical and Bible-related lessons to teach their child such as the Lord’s Prayer or catechism questions. We assist parents by including these things in their curriculum and memory work, and we encourage parents to talk with their children about what they are
learning and discuss those things at the dinner table.
Ask the Lord to help you be sensitive to His promptings. Just as some children may pray the same thing
each time, “Help no one get hurt on the playground” or “Thank you for this food,” we should pray daily for sensitivity to His guiding on what your child needs to learn. Likewise, as teachers, we care to pray and discern the same for your child.
By being specific, rather than general with our New Year’s resolutions, I believe we will see God move in the hearts of our keiki.
