Today we walked around Rome. In the morning we met our guide, Fabrizio, and he took us to the Vatican. Because we are a Christian school, we chose to respect the churches so the girls wore dresses and skirts, while Thomas wore dress pants and a tie. The dress code strangely set a solemn tone.
The passage we were assigned to read today is from Isaiah 40. In this chapter is one of my favorite verses; it talks about how we as fallen beings are like grass and flowers that fade but the word of God lasts forever. I didn’t realize it at first, but we got to see that verse come alive as we perceived paintings and tapestries in beautifully made churches which have lasted for centuries.
People built those churches as a form of worship and artists created gorgeous paintings as a display of their faith; but each and every one of them died. However, the God that their actions were in honor of is still alive and the faith of Christianity is blooming today just like Isaiah had said.
We look around and everywhere there are glimpses of proof that Jesus lives today. It is such a privilege to travel to places where our faith comes to life in art and architecture. I can only desire to have the devotion of those who put in endless hours into the artwork which honors our God.
