The books that were assigned (by the principals and myself) and the many other books they read have served to inspire, challenge their thinking, shape their affections in subtle ways, expand their knowledge and confidence in teaching their subjects, and give them new ideas to try with their students this year.
So, here is what I love about this-that we have educators who model learning. And, that they find in our community the freedom to share their thoughts to learn and grow from each other. But, what I especially love is the deeper heart attitude of humility and the willingness to sit under a body of knowledge, or under a wise counselor, and to listen and learn. So, rather than sitting above in judgment, our teachers and staff are willing to put themselves under the teaching of another as they consider new ideas, best practices, and biblical exhortation. And, they allow themselves to be changed by it.
We hope this is especially true of our approach to God's Word. When we open up our Bibles, we are saying: This is time better spent, a book more valuable than others, wisdom to be gained that is higher than my own, a story of love and redemption above all stories, truth I could find nowhere else, authority I can trust... and the opportunity to know the living God and his son Jesus Christ. May we regularly and deeply put ourselves under the counsel of God's Word.
That is the spirit in which we kick off school this week-we are here to learn! All of us! And what a privilege it is to learn.
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18
