My first discovery was that our students are growing and thriving in the TCS model. Each class has its own character - from the contemplative to the high-spirited, but all the year groups had a similar, deep engagement with the material and a healthy respect for others. Those are two of the core objectives of a classical Christian education, and it was apparent that the school is actively pursuing these ends. After all, we want our graduates to know how to learn, to think for themselves, and to enjoy the exploration of knowledge. We also want our students to be confident and respectful in the presence of authority, as well as gracious and charitable with one another. After seeing these children, I am persuaded that the school is making substantive progress in both these academic and community goals.
In regards to the faculty and staff, I cannot imagine a group of people more invested in the achievement of the children entrusted to their care. To a person, they displayed grace to their students and devotion to education. Mr. Brians and Mrs. Keane used their energy and eloquence to bring forth cogent analysis from their students. Dr. Katoa and Mr. Hampton demonstrated poise and calm while challenging the children in math and science. Mr. Edmonds and Mr. Moore presented multiple viewpoints on their subjects, spurring the students to form rational and informed opinions. Mrs. Sprague and Ms. Jackson dove headfirst into the activities of their classes, teaching via full engagement and interaction. I am proud to be associated with an institution that has such fine educators, and I only wish the day was longer so I could have seen the rest of the TCS teachers in the classroom.
Does this mean that Trinity is perfect? No, there will always be room for improvement. For example, there would be great benefit in further building the community at TCS. One way that we, as parents, can aid in this endeavor is by playing a larger role in the school's everyday life. The beautiful thing about this call to community is that this participation does not need to be time consuming or hard. Please, come visit one of your children's classes. Eat lunch with your student one day. Be a visible presence on campus. You are welcome and desired at TCS.
Between the students and the faculty, Trinity Christian School is already an incredibly special place of learning and Christian growth. With the further engagement of all of us, TCS can become even more extraordinary and distinctive. Let's build our community. Let's develop a sense of 'ohana within this school that is unparalleled anywhere else on the island. The resulting relationships and investment in the children's lives will bless everyone.
