Good morning everyone! We are up and at 'em this morning and ready for another busy day. We have a good breakfast in us, and we are now in the bus touring the lava flows and making our way to the black sand beach. Then we will head to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau--the place of refuge--where the Hawaiians could come for shelter from war or if they had broken a kapu law. We learned last night the story of how God brought word of Christ to his beloved people who were suffering under a merciless system of law. We have been very excited to find out that we know an actual descendant of Henry Opukaha'ia who played a pivotal role in God's plan by bringing word to American missionaries of the plight of his people. Do you know who it is? None other than our own fifth grader, Mauhia Kimata! Wow!

Yes! Mauhia's Tutu and auntie were responsible for bringing Henry's remains (iwi) back to Hawaii in 1993 from Cornwall, Connecticut where Henry died of Typhus fever at a young age (26 years). The details of Henry Opukahaia's homecoming is documented in an epilogue to be included in a reprint of his memoirs to be released on October 18, 2012 at the Mission House Museum. A good opportunity for extra credit (??)

We will most definitely have to add that book to our collection. This summer we are planning to do an entire reworking of the Hawaiian history and culture curriculum, putting study into every grade and organized into our historical timeline. Our local history is a big part of who we are.
